“Keira!”

I jumped, the thunderous boom breaking my trance. Spinning on my heel, I faced the man we’d been talking about, his handsome face having a different kind of definition in this new light.

“Archer.” Lydia stepped forward, concern clouding her face. “What is it? What happened?”

Every hard line of this man was under strain as he came over to us.

“Hunter said something happened with Walt…”

Walt? From the post office?

“He’s in the hospital.”

I froze.

“What?” Lydia gasped, and Archer immediately grabbed her shoulder when she swayed. “How? Was it the alcohol?”

The muscle in his jaw vibrated. “No, he was attacked.”

“Oh, my Lord.” She pressed her hands to her cheeks, her eyes welling with tears. “I’ve known Walt since… before you were born.”

“I’m sorry, Mom—”

“No, no. Don’t be sorry.” She nodded. “Just tell me, do you have any idea who did this?”

The shake of his head was quick, but the way he looked at me when he did it lingered much longer.

It couldn’t have to do with me. How could it?

“Not yet,” he added gruffly. “Diehl went with him over to the hospital in Jackson.”

“Alright, well I should go, too—”

“Mom—”

“Don’t mom me.” Her tone hardened and she wiped her tears. Suddenly, I saw the women who’d risen up and raised five children in the wake of her husband’s death and then became mayor of this town. “That man changed his mail route in order to walk you boys home from school each day, so I wouldn’t have to leave work or worry. I need to be there. I’m the only family he has.”

We both knew she wasn’t really his blood. Based on what I knew of Walt, he didn’t have any living relatives, and that meant that Lydia was his family in the only way that mattered.

“Take Hunter with you,” Archer said in a way that left no room for question. Not surprising.

She acquiesced with a nod and then walked quickly back toward the stairwell.

“Keira…”

I shivered, all of that intense, adrenaline-filled focus was now on me.

“Is this because of me?” I asked with a small voice, feeling myself tumble back to the girl I’d been when I first met him. Vulnerable and alone.

“I don’t know, but I need…” He exhaled. “I need to talk to you.”
